Well since I mentioned it below I'll start off the first proper post about Painted Canyons.
Located in the town of Mecca a census-designated place (CDP) in Riverside County, California. The population was 5,402 as of the 2000 census. Mecca is predominately an agricultural community - with a large portion of its population consisting of migrant farm-workers employed throughout the Coachella valley.
From the 10 freeway take the 86S exit to 66th Ave follow state Highway 195 until you cross over Coachella Canal on the left you should see a sign that says Painted Canyons. Follow the washboard road until you get to the end. Plenty of open space for large groups.
The highlight of most trips to Painted Canyons is the famous Ladder Canyon hike. Located at the very end of Painted Canyon road. Follow the canyon until you pass a pile of rocks making an arrow pointing to the left. You'll hop over into a little enclosed area free from most wind. Great spot for a safety meeting and some fuel.
The hike takes you through a sweet slot canyon with a few ladders to aid you up. 20+ of us hiked this last weekend during the full moon and had a blast. Very crazy coming down the trail in the dark with just some moonlight. Even crazier were the 20 costumed heads doing the hike!
Watch for the sun during the day. Zaps the energy. Plenty of great hikes all throuh out the canyons so feel free to explore.
The downside about Painted Canyons is the random gun shots you hear all day. Don't worry too much it's just the shooting range on the other side. Plenty of trash left over from other groups who don't give a rats patootie about the environment and feel that leaving bibles, microwaves and other random junk is ok.
There is an AM/PM down the street with a Del Taco and A Subway. I believe someone said the have $7 dollar showers there. So stock up there so you don't have to drive in and out a hundred times.
I'll post some pictures when Brandon wakes up.
